Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community

Welcome

to the Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community.

Retail businesses and restaurants

Standing still is regression – this truth also applies to Mittlere Berliner Strasse as a shopping street. This is why the property owners resident here have joined forces to form the Real Estate and Location Community. The aim is to further enhance the quality of life in this prime location. The association has existed in Gütersloh since the end of 2012. The private commitment of the homeowners has made it possible for Mittlere Berliner Straße to be launched as the first statutory Real Estate and Location Community in East Westphalia and the third statutory Real Estate and Location Community in North Rhine-Westphalia. Initiators Albrecht Diekötter, Peter Oesterhelweg and Bernd Sperling are delighted about the pioneering role which Gütersloh is playing in this matter throughout OWL (Eastern Westphalia-Lippe region).

This will make Mittlere Berliner Straße an even more attractive calling card for the city, and will help to make the Gütersloh location even more attractive and liveable. Real Estate and Location Community – a model that should set a precedent!

The "Winterlicht" project of the ISG Mittlere Berliner Straße e.V. association was supported with funds from the "Verfügungsfonds" funding program in accordance with Section 14 of the 2008 urban renewal funding guidelines.

The rainbow coloured fabric canopy is one of the many campaigns initiated by the Real Estate and Location Community

Mittlere Berliner Straße

Berliner Straße is the main shopping street of Gütersloh, and was the first street to be paved in 1820. The façades of the buildings constructed in the 19th century still bear witness to the prosperity of the businesspeople at that time. In 1972, Berliner Straße became Gütersloh's first pedestrian zone. The campaigns of the Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community e. V. make the district even more liveable, which contributes to a significant increase in the attractiveness of the inner city as a whole, of course.

Board member of the association

The Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community e.V. is managed by three board members and supplemented by four other members.

1st Chairman

Christoph Fritzenkötter

2nd Chairman and Treasurer

3rd Chairman and Secretary

What does the Real Estate and Location Community do?

The goal of real estate and location communities is to increase the liveliness and attractiveness of their neighbourhoods. The Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community e.V. association has given itself the task of making life in the district even pleasanter.

Real estate and location communities want to increase the liveliness and attractiveness of their neighbourhoods. Since 2008, North Rhine-Westphalia has also had a state law basis for implementing a Real Estate and Location Community. A Real Estate and Location Community is an important instrument which involves all property owners for ensuring that reliable, solidarity-based financing of activities for the promotion and enhancement of the attractiveness of a neighbourhood is available.

The Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community has given itself the task of making life in the shopping street even pleasanter. The aim is to make Mittlere Berliner Strasse stand out from the other streets, and be regarded as "the" shopping and experience boulevard in Gütersloh. The beautifully designed flower ellipses during Gütersloh Spring, the Mediterranean atmosphere during Michaelmas week, the winter lights during the dark season and the street artists on Advent Saturdays make a significant contribution to this. Money has also been invested in new and modern seating with LED lighting, which invites people to linger and enhances the entire streetscape.

This is intended to attract many customers and visitors to the inner city of Gütersloh.

These and many other campaigns are made possible by the Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community By the citizens of Gütersloh for the citizens of Gütersloh. The Real Estate and Location Community is supported by the Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community e. V. association

Road section

The resident property owners between the Fritzenkötter Café on the corner of Berliner Straße/Schulstraße and Berliner Platz have joined forces to form the Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community.

Members

The Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community e.V. association currently has 27 members.

Every resident property owner is automatically a paying member of the real estate and location community in accordance with the law governing real estate and location communities (ISGG NRW) section 4, paragraph 3, and can therefore also become a member of the supporting association Mittlere Berliner Straße Real Estate and Location Community e.V.

Fair trade

All Pages

Gütersloh is a Fairtrade city

Cities that have been recognized as "Fair Trade Towns" are pioneers in their commitment to fair trade. Gütersloh is no exception! To be allowed to bear the "Fair Trade Town" seal, criteria must be met on many levels. Gütersloh was named a Fair Trade Town for the first time in 2012.

What distinguishes Fairtrade cities

The "Fair Trade Towns" are a campaign by TransFair e.V. to promote fair trade in the One World. The aim of the campaign is to bring together the numerous players from society, politics and business to jointly support fair trade locally.

We want to encourage the numerous Gütersloh stakeholders from trade, politics and civil society to act together and set an example - against poverty in the Third World and for a fairer organization of world trade.

How Gütersloh gets involved

Products with the seal of approval are now also an integral part of public and church institutions - several Gütersloh schools and some clubs have been involved in the campaign since the project began.

The "Fairtrade" steering group is successfully promoting the sale of Fairtrade products: Numerous retailers and restaurants in Gütersloh have fairly traded products in their range. Products with the Fairtrade seal stand for a ban on child labor, forced labor and discrimination, for minimum prices for producers and for the protection of water resources, among other things.

Here you can find more information about the project "Fair Trade Town"!

Here you can find more information about "Fairtrade" in Gütersloh!

Fair weeks

Every year in the fall, the "Fair Week" takes place as part of the "Fairtrade City of Gütersloh" project.
Together with the church and the city, Gütersloh stakeholders from trade, gastronomy and clubs offer a varied program on the topic of "Fair Trade - Fair Living". The focus is on informative events and interesting product offers.

Barrier-free city centre

Barrier-free city centre

Gütersloh is a city of short distances. But not everyone finds it easy to travel these distances, which is why we are collaborating with the City of Gütersloh Advisory Committee for the Disabled to gradually make Gütersloh's city centre barrier-free.

The first step for any problem is being aware of it: Gütersloh is not (yet!) barrier-free. But we're working on it, and that is already step two: we have various ideas about how we can make the city barrier-free. Step three is the implementation thereof.

Service Q

Service Q

Q like quality and service

In order to define and continuously improve our own standards, we have been certified by the "ServiceQualität Deutschland in NRW" initiative and have repeatedly received the "Q" seal for service quality. With the Service Initiative's training and quality seal programme, we have consistently analyzed our services from the customer's perspective in order to continuously and sustainably optimize our internal processes.

Q - the sure sign of service and quality

After all, the trend is increasingly going back to the real values: friendly service and sustainable quality. The initiative "ServiceQuality Germany" has developed a nationwide, three-stage system for the step-by-step improvement of services and offerings using practice-oriented tools. Service Q" offers small and medium-sized businesses in the hotel, catering and tourism sectors as well as service companies a simple quality management system that helps to continuously optimize the quality of operations and increase customer satisfaction.

Simply be better

Better service promises enthusiastic customers, motivated employees and satisfied business partners. So it always pays off for participating companies to use "ServiceQualität Deutschland" to further develop and improve the quality of their offerings and internal processes. Establishments audited by "Service Q" are allowed to identify themselves with the "Q" quality seal and thus send a signal that they are interested in further development, have worked on service quality and are pursuing it on a sustained basis. For end consumers, this offers the security of being able to trust an operation certified to a tested quality standard.

#TeutoBloggerWG 2021

Teuto Blogger WG 2021

17 - 19 September 2021

Idea & Partner of the action

The TeutoBloggerWG started again on September 17, 2021. The Teutoburg Forest Tourism hosted the action 2021 for the fifth time.

During the weekend, nine bloggers with a wide reach came to the region and individually took part in different programs throughout the Teutoburg Forest vacation region.

2021, the common accommodation - the "base station" - was located in Gütersloh. From there, the bloggers set off on the weekend to their respective 3-4 half-day programs, which were offered and organized by a total of 30 partners from the entire vacation and leisure region of the Teutoburg Forest.

Places, museums, spas, health care providers and the impressive landscapes of the region were visited.

As the bloggers stay in the same accommodation and exchange their experiences in the evenings and over breakfast, the weekend takes on the "flat-sharing" character that makes the event so special.

Impressions of the experiences of the bloggers* are always available from the start of the TeutoBloggerWG among others on our Instagram channel to find.

You can also find all the experiences under the hashtag #TeutoBloggerWG and at the Instagram channel of the Teutoburg Forest Tourimus:

More posts by the bloggers can also be found at the Social Media Wall of the TeutoBloggerWG.

C-City - Europe is next door

All Pages

The big kick-off event for the C-City Conference at the Stadthalle Gütersloh

What is C-City?

The project:
Exchanging creative ideas, spinning them out and creating a large network: that's the transnational cultural project C-City - Europe is next door. No matter how far the distance between two countries, how much their geographical location shapes their cultural self-image - they are always connected by one thing: the language of culture. The initiators of the C-City project in Gütersloh were inspired by this bridge-building element.

The kick-off event with workshops, lectures and excursions took place in Gütersloh from May 12 to 14, 2022. The aim was to establish a network in which cultural projects would be implemented annually starting in 2025 - in individual actions, but also simultaneously in various partner cities.

The actors:

All citizens from Gütersloh and the partner cities who, in addition to the municipal organizers, would like to become a supporting moment of C-City: Associations, groups, organizations - all are cordially invited.

What happens:
The kick-off conference served to get to know each other better and develop ideas for joint projects. From May 12 to 14, 2022 in Gütersloh on site - then in 2025 at the latest in a variety of ways and spanning Europe: active or in the audience, analog or digital. Through mutual visits or through the transmission possibilities of the Internet, borderlessness will be lived and the principle of "Think out of the Box" will be made the order of the day.
In Gütersloh, work will be done on the following overarching themes: Music, History and Customs, Sports, Food and Lifestyle, Exhibitions, and Theater and Literature.

The goal:
The idea "Cultural-City - Europe is next door" will not only create culture that overcomes (language) barriers. C-City is also an active contribution to peace work, because each person becomes aware of his or her identity and responsibility as a European.

Store home

What is "shopping for home"?

The "Heimat shoppen" project of the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) aims to highlight the importance of local purchasing power and thus to strengthen local gastronomy, stationary retail trade and local service companies.

Gütersloh has been participating in the "Heimat shoppen" project since 2021 to make shopping in Gütersloh and visiting the city center attractive and worthwhile.

In the meantime, campaign days for "shopping at home" are held throughout Germany on the 2nd weekend in September. Local businesses not only supply citizens with goods and services, they also shape the cityscape, secure jobs and apprenticeships, are involved in events and city festivals, and can provide personal advice and special services thanks to their proximity to citizens. In addition, the business tax paid by retailers, service providers and restaurateurs is an important source of income for every municipality. Every euro spent locally helps to make a city lively and worth living in.

Impressions of the past campaign days and the "Crazy Shopping" can be found viewed here.

SIX GOOD REASONS

Why shopping local pays off

1. "Shopping at home" means shopping with neighbors and friends.

Good advice and service increase customer satisfaction. Who better to advise you than someone who knows what you want because they know you personally, because they live where you live.

2. "Heimat shoppen" supports events, associations and initiatives

Club life needs local businesses, because the organizers of events and community festivals often receive financial support from local companies. This means that with every purchase and every visit to a local restaurant, you are also supporting customs and civic engagement in your home region.

3. "Shopping at home" secures work and training

Together, stores and restaurants are one of the largest local employers and one of the largest vocational trainers. With every purchase you make, you help keep it that way and offer young people an economic perspective at home. This keeps your community young and vibrant.

4. "Home shopping" makes your community livable

Not only buildings and history make a place special. The variety of shopping opportunities and the specialness of the gastronomy also characterize your community. The more you take advantage of these offers, the more attractive and lively your town becomes.

5. "Shopping at home" reduces the environmental impact

The farther you drive for your shopping, the more you burden the environment - and your wallet. Shopping locally means less energy consumption, less traffic jams and more time and money for other nice things.

6. "Home shopping" strengthens your community

Every euro you spend within the municipal boundaries benefits your home, because retailers and restaurateurs pay business tax. This tax is the most important source of revenue for municipalities. Thus, with every purchase or restaurant visit, you strengthen the economic foundation of your locality.

#TeutoBloggerWG

#TeutoBloggerWG idea

Conceived as a "residential community" of bloggers, who are individually different, undertake programs throughout the region and exchange ideas in the evening and over breakfast, each has a single room in the (same) hotel.

From there, the bloggers take part in various programs offered and organized by partners from the entire Teutoburg Forest vacation and leisure region. Places, museums, spas, health service providers and the impressive landscapes of the region are visited.

Meeting interesting, travel-experienced people and getting their feedback in the form of blog posts and other posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and co. is an exciting affair every time.

Impressions of the bloggers' experiences in and around Gütersloh are always available from the start of the respective TeutoBloggerWG, among others, on our Instagram channel to find.

Teuto Blogger WG 2022

9 - 11 September 2022

Organizer of the Teuto Blogger WG:

In 2022, the Blogger WG organized by Teutoburg Forest Tourism took place for the sixth time. From September 9 to 11, nine bloggers with a wide reach visited the region. Their accommodation this year was in Detmold. The bloggers met there in the mornings and evenings to share their experiences, which gave the event its special WG character. During the day, they took part in various individually planned programs in the Teutoburg Forest vacation and leisure region.

On the Instagram channel of the Teutoburg Forest Tourimus the bloggers' experiences can be found in the story highlights.

In addition, the Teutoburg Forest Tourism will present the posts of the bloggers on the Social Media Wall of the #TeutoBloggerWG together.

Blogger in Gütersloh:

This year Stefanie Meckl from www.evaexplora.de came to visit us in Gütersloh. Stefanie is a travel blogger and started her blog "EvaExplora" when she was traveling around the world in 2017. Since then she has been blogging about life's big and small journeys. When she's not traveling, Stefanie works as a journalist and TV reporter from her adopted home in Munich.

Impressions from the Teuto Blogger WG 2022

On September 11, 2022, we were pleased to welcome Stefanie Meckl to our company. As a small welcome gift, Stefanie received a Gift service from Schenke Delikatessen packed basket with regional products as well as "The Great Gütersloh Hidden Object Book" by Brigitte Kuka and Matthias Borner. The program in Gütersloh began for the blogger with a City tours through the city center. The starting point was the historic core of the city around the Church of the Apostles. From there, the tour continued to the city library, the time-honored Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium with its characteristic green ridge turret and the Media Fountain of the Gütersloh entrepreneur Reinhard Mohn. Our city guide Klaus Gottenströter inspired with his broad wealth of experience about the city of Dalke and amusing anecdotes.

The next item on the program awaits the blogger on the forecourt of the theater. With a historical carriage we set off in the direction of the city park. Past the old church square, the noble Parkhotel and the Thesings avenue in the villa district of Gütersloh, the speedy carriage ride ended at the Orchard in the city park.

Afterwards Daniela Toman gave a very informative Guided tour of the city park and botanical garden. The landscape gardener and garden photographer is also 1st Chairwoman of the Förderkreis Stadtpark und Botanischer Garten Gütersloh e. V. as well as an employee in the Department of Green Spaces of the City of Gütersloh and draws on this wealth of experience during her guided tours.

Dear Stefanie, we had a lot of fun showing you our beautiful city on the Dalke!

Klaus Gottenströter

My first city tour: After our training in 2009 on the occasion of the "Monument Day" event

Why I became a city guide: In my professional life, I really enjoyed having contact with lots of people.
In order to keep in touch with people when I retired, I asked myself "what would be an option?". The offer from the VHS in 2008 "GT is looking for city guides" came at just the right time. And it was important to me to continue to challenge my mind and body in old age in order to stay fit.
From today's perspective, my decision back then was absolutely right, because I still enjoy working as a city guide just as much today as I did at the beginning. I go on tour a few dozen times a year.

What do I offer: Cycle tours over "romantic plateaus and through secluded corners", the humorous night watchman tour "With horn and halberd", the culinary tours and various themed events.

My favorite place in Gütersloh: There are a few.
First and foremost is certainly the "Old Church Square", where Gütersloh jumped out of the egg almost 200 years ago...as I like to say on my tours.
And of course the "Trommelpättken", where the night watchman has a lot to tell his guests about the past. Among other things, that this used to be a popular meeting place for young lovers and that they used to make out here. The night watchman used to turn off the lights for the lovers... Unfortunately, the Pättken has lost the flair of times gone by.

Walter Holtkamp

Place of birth/residenceGütersloh

Beginnings: City guide training 2016/2017

My guided tours: I have been offering the "Cycle tour through the farming communities" since 2017. The idea: to impart knowledge outside the city center, especially in the former politically independent farming communities with farms and listed farmhouses, some of which were founded as early as the 9th century.

Since 2018: Guided tours of the former Gütersloh Airport

Since 2022: "Dalke adventure trail cycle tour" city tour

Brunhilde Kohls

My first city tour: I have been guiding visitors through the historic town of Rietberg and its LGS grounds since 2008. I started my first city tour in my home town of Gütersloh in 2009.

Why I became a city guide: I spent my childhood in a farmhouse museum. So I became curious about history and customs at an early age. The origins of Gütersloh and its development up to the present day - and even more so the stories told are inexhaustible and exciting.

What do I offer? What are my main focuses: The classic tour with stories to make you smile. Or combined with funny stories from the life of the market woman "Güth's Marie". Would you like it to be historical? Then: "Windows into the past". On a tour in autumn and winter, you can experience the "Night singing", which is unique in Germany, or contemplatively: "It's Christmas time".

My favorite place in Gütersloh: there are three places

  • the imposing Martin Luther Church
  • an extraordinary private excavation site
  • the impressive theater, next to the historic water tower

Daniela Toman

My first city tour: I have been guiding people through Gütersloh's city park and botanical garden since 2016.

Why I became a city guide: Because it was important to me to be able to present our green living room even better to visitors.

What do I offer? What are my main focuses: Park tours in the city park and botanical garden with a thematic focus on garden culture, flora and photography. In addition, guided tours along the Dalke, with a particular focus on the renaturation measures, especially in the Stadtpark and in Putzhagen.

My favorite place in Gütersloh: The hedge garden in the botanical

Barbara Weidler

My first city tour: As the oldest city guide at the moment, I can safely say that it feels like a hundred years ago when I started taking guests on a city tour by bus. In the days when I worked in the city's press office with Hans-Dieter Musch and also for the tourist office with Peter Grünheit.

Why I became a city guide: From this daily work, I developed more and more interest, then also desire and fun. So I read a lot, asked a lot of people who gave me their knowledge and explored some of the stations. Google and the like didn't exist back then. And the words of some Gütersloh residents, "What do you want to tell me about Gütersloh?" really got me going.

What do I offer? What are my main focuses:
Tours through the city: classic, women's tour and Advent and Christmas customs in the city as well as through the city museum.

In the Botanical Garden on various topics: "Fat Friends", where I present some special trees, among other things. "Biblical plants in the botanical garden", "Smell them" on the subject of scents and smells, "Witch's herbs" about lucky plants and superstition.

My favorite place in Gütersloh:
In the city center, the old church square and the squares and courtyards. In the botanical garden with its apothecary garden, which is part of the city park. Because you can watch nature grow and develop there all year round. And every year you can admire the seasonal flowerbeds with their different colors and plants.

Mobile ramps

Mobile ramps for Gütersloh

We have been overseeing the "Mobile Ramps" project together with the Advisory Council for the Disabled for several years now. The project was made possible by Hans Diestelkamp, a native of Gütersloh. Unfortunately, he passed away, but left us a worthy mission.

Where the idea came from

Hans Diestelkamp was himself a wheelchair user. Therefore, the topic of accessibility in the city (whereby the subject of accessibility covers many other different topics such as poor vision and impaired hearing!) was a matter that was close to his heart, and he established the Dr. Salk Memorial Foundation for the Disabled together with his wife Ingrid.

The foundation is dedicated to educating people about life with disabilities, and improving the quality of life of the persons affected by those limitations. It also supports research and lobbying work, particularly in the post-polio syndrome area.

Why mobile ramps?

Anyone travelling around the city in a wheelchair will encounter an essential problem on the way into many buildings: steps. A mobile ramp is a great help!

And not only wheelchair users are confronted with barriers.

Just think about the number of prams and wheeled walkers, and people who are not very good on their feet because of their age...there are many reasons for resorting to aids such as mobile ramps.

What does the "Mobile Ramps" project involve?

The aim of the project is to provide everyone with barrier free access to retail businesses, restaurants and all of the other facilities which are open to the public in the city centre. Anyone, whose establishment can currently only be accessed via steps can register with us. We will then come to you and check the required height of the mobile ramp and coordinate other details.

The Dr. Salk Memorial Foundation for the Disabled provided a fixed sum of money for the implementing the project. This money has since been used to purchase the mobile ramps, supplemented by wireless doorbells and an information sticker. The project is therefore funded by the foundation, and is free of charge to anyone who is interested! The mobile ramps are the property of the Dr. Salk Memorial Foundation, but can be used free of charge for an indefinite period, and gtm will put together a custom-made combination package to adapt to the respective step height. In this way, no more work is created for the interested parties. The mobile ramps are quick to assemble and dismantle, which allows them to be used anywhere, even on small flights of steps, and the amount of work required to use them is minimal.

What do these mobile ramps look like?

The mobile ramps are folding, which allows them to be stowed away to save space when they are not in use. They are made of robust aluminium, and the surface is also made of a specially perforated and therefore slip-resistant material.

Mobile ramps are suitable for electric wheelchairs and also for the aforementioned people with prams and walkers. People can signal that the ramp is needed by pressing the radio bell which is installed at the entrance to the building. The employees on site will then put down the mobile ramp and provide assistance – if needed. Once the ramp has been used, it is removed again so that there is no risk of anyone tripping over it in public areas.

Who is already taking part?

We always call on people to contact us if they are interested. The response is getting bigger and bigger, to date more than thirty facilities have already become barrier-free accessible through mobile ramps! We are happy about each of them - thank you for your commitment to Gütersloh!

You can see all of the participating "Mobile Ramps" partner businesses again here:

Would you like more information or to become a partner directly?

City anniversary 2025

Gütersloh celebrates 2025 city anniversary - celebrate with us!

In 2025, Gütersloh celebrates 200 years of city rights. On this occasion, citizens can expect 200 highlights celebrating Gütersloh's diversity. Numerous private individuals, associations and groups were also able to apply for funding with their ideas for the implementation of their project and thus actively help shape the anniversary program. After all, the city's anniversary should above all be a celebration by citizens for citizens.

The program of the city anniversary 2025

You can find all the information on the anniversary program on the homepage www.200jahreguetersloh.de and in the anniversary brochure, which you can obtain from us at the Tourist Information Office or at numerous other distribution points.

The anniversary logo

Even at first glance, it is clear what the logo wants to say: Gütersloh celebrates its 200th anniversary!

For the colorful elements reminiscent of confetti, the city logo was broken down into its individual parts. The colors chosen were the city colors blue and green, as well as the red from the city's coat of arms. The other colors come from the color families.

The number of individual parts is also no coincidence. The logo has exactly 200 parts, each of which stands for one of the 200 highlights that are part of the anniversary and will be implemented in 2025.

Innovation Factory Gütersloh

IMA Innovation Manufacture Gütersloh

IMA Innovationsmanufaktur Gütersloh was founded in 2022 with a clear vision: To bundle innovative power in Gütersloh and to create an environment in our city that advances us as a location for innovation.

The four pillars of the IMA

Network, knowledge, foundation and innovation are the four pillars on which IMA's work is based. They are all essential for turning the vision into reality:

Network

Gütersloh is a strong business location with numerous companies rich in tradition. In addition to global players such as Miele and Bertelsmann, Gütersloh already has a strong middle class. The IMA would like to network start-ups with the established economy and create a space in which start-ups and traditional companies can benefit from synergy effects. Maintaining such a network is an essential task of the Innovation Factory.

Knowledge

The IMA maintains a close cooperation with the FH Bielefeld, whose Gütersloh campus is located in the immediate vicinity of the IMA. It is not only the spatial proximity that is intended to achieve a strong dovetailing of science and founding spirit. As a place for knowledge transfer

Foundation

Founders benefit from the wide range of services offered by IMA: networking meetings, events, lectures, but also rentable office space, co-working spaces and room for creative development are just a few of the opportunities offered by the Innovation Factory.

Innovation

Innovations are the goal and the driving force of IMA, bringing people together to bundle and develop knowledge is the way to get there. "Real innovations are created where the most diverse people come together," says Jörg Rodehutskors, IMA's managing director.

Team event

Team event bike tour

Cycle, discover, come together

Team events are a good way to promote cohesion between colleagues and strengthen their motivation. They provide an ideal framework for your employees to develop a "we-feeling" and improve their cooperation.

Bicycle tours are particularly suitable for corporate events. With light activity in the fresh air, participants have plenty of opportunities for conversation while exploring the surrounding area. The bike tours are also designed in such a way that they can easily be followed by a stop for refreshments to round off the team event.

Cycling through the farming communities with Walter Holtkamp

On the route of about 10 kilometers you will discover the listed farms of the district. The round takes about 2.5 hours. The tour starts at the parking lot of the St. Pankratius Church. From there, city guide Walter Holtkamp cycles with the group across the farming communities of Kattenstroth, Pavenstädt and Blankenhagen. A complete success

The Gütersloh Feierabend - Sunset Markt took place three times this year on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. Under the mottos "Campfire", "Karaoke" and "Reggae", numerous people gathered in front of the town hall on the last Wednesday in March, April and June to end the day together. After positive feedback from all sides, a continuation is planned for the coming year 2026.

Picnic concert

Summer, music and a relaxed atmosphere - the picnic concert on the green meadow at the Krullsbachaue provided the perfect setting for an atmospheric evening in the open air. Simply bring a picnic blanket, pack your own treats and enjoy the live music - that's exactly what the guests did.

If you didn't have a blanket with you, you could still make yourself comfortable: There were beer tent sets, deck chairs and deck bags available on site. There were also delicious drinks and small snacks.

We thank Krull - Living and living with plants for your support!

Guided tours for children

Guided tours for children

Discover the city through play

City tours are a great way to discover the city in a fun way. Together as a group, you can get to know new places and deepen your knowledge - while having lots of fun. The tours are suitable for groups of up to 30 children.

Through the park with children - discovering nature through play

Take children on a playful discovery tour through the botanical garden.

Park guide Daniela Toman imparts her knowledge about seasonal flowering plants in a child-friendly way and with lots of interesting facts and exciting stories. Wildlife is also part of the tour. Presented in pictures or as specimens, the little explorers get to know different animals. During the city tour, small games are incorporated to maintain concentration and make nature fun. At the end, the children receive themed drawings that they can color in at school.

The tour is particularly interesting in spring, summer and fall.

Gütersloh under National Socialism

National Socialism and World War II left their mark not only in Berlin and at the sites of the former concentration camps. Gütersloh's city history also had its share of ideology and propaganda, crime and destruction. The tour leads to places of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism in the city center, but also presents the biographies of perpetrators and fellow travelers from the city as well as the life of the population during the Nazi era.

Speaker: Norbert Ellermann or Dr. Franz Jungbluth.

Themed tour also bookable for secondary schools: The tour is aimed at school classes that have already covered or are currently covering the topic of National Socialism in class and have a basic knowledge of the Nazi system.

City tour "Gütersloh past and present"

From village to city in one hour - historical city tour for elementary school

It's less than 800 meters from the old church square to the (no longer quite so) new town hall and if you're in a hurry, you can walk the distance in ten minutes. We take an hour, take a detour or two and explore places and stories from the last 800 years in which Gütersloh has grown from a small church village to a large city.
The guided tour is aimed at primary school classes that deal with their home town of Gütersloh or with the topic of time/past and present in their science lessons.

Impressions of the ceremony

Impressions of the ceremony

"Gütersloh is a feeling"

On Sunday, May 18, the city of Gütersloh celebrated its 200th anniversary with an official ceremony in the Stadthalle. Around 1,000 guests from politics, culture, business and delegations from the twin towns of Grudziądz, Falun, Broxtowe and Châteauroux took part in the event. All of the performers in the two-and-a-half-hour program came from Gütersloh. The event was also broadcast live on the internet.

Mayor Matthias Trepper opened the ceremony with a welcoming speech. In it, he described Gütersloh as a "charming village" and emphasized the well-known saying that the city is both a kaffir and a cosmos. This was followed by greetings from the President of the State Parliament, André Kuper from Rietberg, and from the District Administrator of Gütersloh, Sven-Georg Adenauer. Kuper sees Gütersloh's past 200 years as a prime example: "Tradition and progress can produce great things!" He also paid tribute to Germany's first community foundation, founded in Gütersloh in 1996 by entrepreneur Reinhard Mohn. "Each individual can make the city a little more liveable," concluded Kuper, who also made an appeal. Adenauer made it clear how important Gütersloh is as a city - also financially - for the district. He highlighted the anniversary program, which is as colourful and lively as the city with 200 highlights throughout the year. "Community, diversity and commitment - that's what makes Gütersloh special," said the district administrator, praising the 200-year-old district town.

The ceremony was hosted by Susanne Zimmermann, the city's former and long-standing press spokeswoman, with a lot of Gütersloh flair. She herself had waved to the Queen during her visit to Gütersloh in May 1965, recalled the abbreviation HVP (Hertie-Vorplatz / Berliner Platz) and asked the audience who else had learned to swim in the old swimming pool. The event was accompanied by music from the brass ensemble of the Gütersloh fire department's symphonic wind orchestra. The Gütersloh Boys' Choir under the direction of Sigmund Bothmann was introduced by presenter Zimmermann with a comparison to the Vienna Boys' Choir. The Gütersloh choir presented - as always - highly professional works from the Renaissance, accompanied by Yamato Hasumi on the theorbo and Michael Freimuth on the arcilio.

Another highlight was the dance choreography by the Neumann sports and ballet school, which delighted the audience with a specially rehearsed dance and tap dance performance. Dr. Christoph Lorke from the LWL Institute for Westphalian Regional History, together with moderator Zimmermann, offered a historical review of 200 years of the city's history with reference to the second part of the book on the city's history. In Lorke's opinion, Gütersloh is a city that needs a retrospective explanation. The comedy trio Vox Rindvieh provided humorous accents and a satirical look at "our Gütersloh" with excerpts from their anniversary show "200 years of Gütersloh - and how much longer do we have to go?". Gütersloh cannot be described, because "Gütersloh is a feeling". At the end of the performance, the 1,000 or so guests at the ceremony stood clapping enthusiastically and sang "Oh Gütersloh" to the tune of "Sweet Caroline".

As part of the ceremony, the partnerships with Grudziądz (35 years) and Falun (30 years) were also honored with the signing of certificates. The ceremony concluded with the cutting of the anniversary cake by Mayor Trepper, accompanied by the musical sounds of the brass ensemble. Afterwards, the town invited guests to a champagne reception with anniversary cake in the foyer of the town hall, where they had the opportunity to sign the guest book.

The ceremony was part of an extensive anniversary programme with a total of 200 events that the city of Gütersloh is organizing together with committed citizens over the course of 2025. Further information and dates are available on the official anniversary website at www.200jahreguetersloh.de. A photo gallery of the ceremony is available at www.guetersloh.de.

The Jewish Gottschalk family once ran a textile store in the small farmhouse on Berliner Straße. After their expulsion, the Wiesenhöfer company took over the business before the Opitz department store was later established. Today, the store is home to a branch of Vero Moda and Jack&Jones.

The building is part of the office and commercial building at Berliner Strasse 26-28, which was built over several decades - in three construction phases between 1927 and 2006. Today, the approximately 1,900 m² space is mainly used by the Danish textile company Bestseller to which Vero Moda belongs. The lease has just been extended until the end of March 2031 - so fashion still has a permanent place here.

What did an oversized whistle have to do with sporting ambition?

In 1892, master wood turner Heinrich Friesenhausen from Gütersloh and his wife Anna initially opened a small store for pipes, tobacco products and umbrellas in the Ruhr area - more precisely in Altenessen. However, the economic upturn in the region did not bring the hoped-for success, so the couple returned to Gütersloh in the spring of 1893 and took over the property at Berliner Straße 25 from master bookbinder Thormann. Here, in the heart of the city, they continued to develop their business successfully.

Friesenhausen made many of the pipes he sold himself on the lathe. As an eye-catching advertising sign, he mounted an oversized Münsterland pipe above the store entrance - but this soon had to be removed as it was repeatedly misused as a horizontal bar by pupils from the nearby Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium.

In 1912, the original Ackerbürgerhaus was replaced on the same site by a new Art Nouveau building, whose elegant façade still dominates the cityscape towards Kökerstraße to this day. The special ambience of the store still conveys a sense of the building's long history when you enter.

After the First World War, Heinrich Friesenhausen's nephew Leo Rascher-Friesenhausen joined the business and successfully expanded the range to include cigars and pipe tobacco. After joining the Ermuri merchants' association in 1933, Friesenhausen became one of the leading specialist tobacco stores in East Westphalia. The company has been run by the same family for four generations - currently by Christopher Rascher-Friesenhausen, who is continuing the tradition with great dedication.

Today, more than 130 years after it was founded, the traditional store still exists at the same location. With its original Art Nouveau interior, it is a living testimony to regional business tradition - and a real piece of living city history.

Why was the half-timbered house of the Müller butcher's shop moved back in 1966 and not simply rebuilt on the old site?

There was already a butcher's shop at Berliner Straße 184 b in 1783 - a long tradition that was relaunched in 1873 with butcher Fritz Kniepkamp. In 1932, Georg Müller, the grandfather of the current owner, took over the butcher's store and continued to run it. In 1966, the original half-timbered house was demolished and the new building was moved back slightly to eliminate a bend in the road and improve traffic flow. Today, Natur Metzgerei Müller is particularly well known for its homemade specialty: Silesian bratwurst, which is produced directly on site.

Which two specialist stores with a shared façade shaped the cityscape in Berliner Strasse from 1966?

In 1966, two traditional Gütersloh specialist stores opened right next to each other in Berliner Straße: the Müller-Derigs butcher's shop at number 33 and the Schmäling bakery/pastry shop at number 35. Their uniform façade allowed the two stores to merge visually into a single unit - an image that many Gütersloh residents still remember today.

Café Schmäling in particular made its mark on the cityscape: a new, inviting café was created on the second floor with direct access via the spacious sales area on the first floor. The offer was impressive - in addition to an extensive range of sweet baked goods and over 45 types of bread, international delicacies were also sold.

Today, nothing is reminiscent of the smell of fresh bread rolls - since February 7, 2019, Smile Optik has been located here, the new chapter of a traditional location in the heart of Gütersloh's city center.

How did a small watch store in Kökerstraße become one of the most striking buildings in Berliner Straße - and even the Gütersloh Gold Ducat?

City Archive Gütersloh, Hans-Dieter mussel
Previous slide

In 1899, master watchmaker Heinrich Laumann opened a store for watches, goldware and optical articles at Kökerstrasse 293. After just twelve years, the premises were too small and so a new store was built at Berliner Straße 42. The façade with its ornately decorated bay windows was just as impressive as the spacious rear courtyards, which at the time were still home to fruit and vegetable gardens. At the time of construction, the building was surrounded by the half-timbered houses that characterized Gütersloh at the time.

After the death of Heinrich Laumann Senior in 1953, his son Heinrich continued to run the business together with his wife Margarete. Having been in business since 1947, they initially coped with the difficult post-war period by selling cookware. However, as the economy began to recover, people soon rediscovered their love of jewelry. Silver, gold-plated pieces with green stones and soon higher-quality jewelry expanded the range. The "joy of something special" became the guiding principle of the company.

When Heinrich Laumann died in 1993, he and Margarete had been running the business for 45 years. The Gütersloh gold ducat also dates from this time - a memento made of almost pure gold (986/1000), 20 millimeters in size and weighing 3.5 grams. With the Gütersloh coat of arms on one side and the towers of the Martin Luther and Apostle Churches on the other, it was intended as an exclusive souvenir, piece of jewelry or gift. The edition was limited, the exclusive sale was at Juwelier Laumann, and for 35 DM you could secure yourself a piece of Gütersloh history.

Bruno Laumann, the founder's grandson, had already set up his own goldsmith's shop in 1974. As a master goldsmith, he turned his attention to handmade jewelry and recognized early on the possibilities of platinum, which was still not widely used at the time. The "Collection N" - individual pieces of jewelry made from 750 gold and platinum - was created in collaboration with three master goldsmith friends.

Before April 2020, the building was home to "The Phone House" before the women's clothing store Liberty moved in. Liberty, founded in Lübbecke in 1976, operates over 100 stores nationwide. In Gütersloh, the company uses an area of around 66 square meters, which was designed in the typical Liberty style.

Today, Berliner Strasse 42 is a listed building and is considered one of the most striking old buildings in Gütersloh's pedestrian zone.

How did a small milliner's store become a modern fashion house with a pioneering role?

In October 1898, Adolfine Wörmann founded a store for women's hat fashion in Gütersloh. As a trained "milliner", she developed and produced her own hat collection directly on site. In the 1920s, the so-called "Umpresserei" was added to the production of exclusive hats - a factory building with warehouse and office was built behind the store specifically for this purpose.

The modern commercial building at Berliner Straße 43-45 was built in the 1930s. Eduard Keisinger, who later became Else Wörmann's husband, also joined the company as a businessman at that time. Else Wörmann managed the business through the difficult times of the Second World War and thus ensured the continued existence of the company.

Today, Modehaus Wörmann is run by the fourth generation. It was the first store in Berliner Strasse to be equipped with a mobile ramp with the support of the Dr. Salk Memorial Foundation for the Disabled - an early example of accessibility in retail.

After 100 years full of stories, which house on Berliner Strasse is now waiting for a new chapter?

Previous slide
Next slide

The house at Berliner Strasse 44 has an eventful history. It originally bore the house numbers 192 and 332 before it hit the headlines in 1910 due to a devastating fire. Just one year later, in 1911, a new building was erected on the site, which soon became home to various families of craftsmen and tradesmen: Roggenkamps as carters, Raßfelds as merchants, Ueckmanns as bakers - and finally the Fricke family. Walter Fricke ran his bookbindery here, while Arnold Fricke supplied generations of Gütersloh residents with his paper and stationery store. The family dominated the townscape until 1969, before the building became "Schuh-Quelle", which existed until 1972.

After 1972, its use changed several times - like many city center buildings, no. 44 also experienced the structural changes in the retail trade. Today, the building is empty, but its façade is still a reminder of more than 100 years of city history. It is currently looking for new tenants - and perhaps someone will soon be writing the next chapter in this traditional location.

What does the house at Berliner Strasse 46 tell us about Jewish life and urban trade in Gütersloh?

Previous slide
Next slide

The house at Berliner Straße 46 has a long and eventful history dating back to the 18th century. In 1865, butcher Moses Wolf moved into the half-timbered house and opened his butcher's shop there. After moving to Osnabrück due to his age, his colleague Jacob Eichwald took over the business. He himself lived with his family at Hohenzollernstraße 1, while he continued to run the business in Berliner Straße.

In 1929, the old building was demolished and replaced by a new building. Kaiser's Kaffee-Geschäft opened a branch in this new building - a popular store selling coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, pralines, pastries, colonial goods and preserves. The store continued to be a lively part of the town's retail trade. It was damaged during the Second World War, but was repaired in 1945. An important place of remembrance is also located here: a stumbling block in front of the building commemorates Emma Löwenstein, who lived here during the National Socialist era and was later deported.

How does a building manage to become the lively center of the city over the decades, both as a hotel and as a restaurant location?

In the mid-1920s, Eduard and Lina Scheck fulfilled a great dream by opening their hotel in the city center. The "Hotel Scheck" quickly became a popular meeting place for Gütersloh's merchants and had a lasting impact on the cityscape. In 1940, Eduard Scheck handed over the management to his daughter Elisabeth and her husband Fritz Falkenreck.

After the Second World War, the hotel served as an English family hotel for members of the British soldiers stationed here until 1950. Between 1950 and 1966, the hotel was leased out before the use of the building changed in 1966: While the basement continued to be used as a restaurant, the upper floors were initially used as offices and later as apartments.

A special chapter in the history of the hotel is the "Scheck In" pub, which was opened by the great-grandson of the founder, Michael Falkenreck. Based on the original hotel, the "Scheck In" built on the traditional past and became a popular meeting place for young and old in Gütersloh. Before the "Scheck In" moved in, the Italian restaurateur Salvatore Liotta had run a pizzeria here for 15 years. As a result, the basement of the building remained a lively gastronomic venue for many decades.

The lingerie store Lascana later moved in before the optician Mister Spex took over the location in summer 2022 - and gave the traditional building a new use.

What connects a Jewish department store, a cattle dealer and seven elm trees in the middle of the city?

House numbers 48 and 50 in Berliner Straße tell several chapters of Gütersloh's history - from the early half-timbered houses to today's shopping street.

On the site of today's Berliner Strasse 48 once stood a half-timbered house that had been built before 1783. In 1872, it was acquired by the cattle dealer Adolf Wolfbefore it came into the possession of the shoemaker Franz Eberlein passed over. After the Second World War, the merchant Friedrich Tewesmeier rebuild the site. The building complex has been in its current form since 1984.

Right next to it, at the Berliner Strasse 50from 1913 to 1937 was home to the Eisenstein department store oHGwhich was developed by Benjamin and Emma Eisenstein was run. Up to twelve departments offered everything from fabrics and leather goods to toiletries.

Today, this building houses the branch of H&M.

The comprehensive redesign of Berliner Strasse, which was completed in October 2020, has given the area a completely new look: barrier-free crossings, modern lighting, new sidewalks and seven newly planted columnar elms significantly enhance the streetscape and increase the quality of stay for passers-by and customers.

Why did a jewelry company start making cutlery from gold coins over 200 years ago?

© Photo from the Weidler family estate
Previous slide

The oldest jewelry store in East Westphalia-Lippe has its home in Gütersloh and looks back on an impressive company history of 233 years - a sign of quality, tradition and genuine craftsmanship. The business was founded at Berliner Straße 10 before later moving to Berliner Straße 56. Only Krönig'sche Apotheke, which was founded in 1731, is even older and has therefore been at the location even longer. This makes the jewelry store even older than the town charter, which is being celebrated this year.

The document you see in the shop window is a so-called Privilegium - an official approval with which the company founder Louis Viemann was recognized as a gold and silver worker by Emil Friedrich Karl the First, Count of Bentheim-Tecklenburg, on 14 November 1792. This license was necessary in order to meet the demands of landowners and princes.

From around 1780, wealthy households replaced their simple wooden spoons with elaborately crafted cutlery made from melted gold coins to show off their wealth and emphasize their upscale lifestyle. Today, master goldsmith Frank Weidler, successor to his father Fritz, who died in 2022, no longer makes gold and silver cutlery from coins - and his clientele no longer includes landowners and princes. But the master craftsman still feels deeply committed to the traditional craftsmanship at the workbench - just as his predecessors did over two centuries ago.

Master goldsmith Frank Weidler runs the family business with great passion and attention to detail. In addition to an exquisite selection of jewelry and watches, he offers a comprehensive range of services - from repairs to individual creations to quick battery changes.

How do 15,000 pairs of shoes, a historic façade and one of the city's largest construction sites fit together?

In March 1949, the married couple Wilhelm and Ursula Keßel opened a specialist shoe store at Berliner Straße 35 - initially on just 40 square meters. However, the selection of women's, men's, children's and slippers was so well received by customers that the business grew rapidly: the shoe store soon moved to the corner of Berliner Straße and Schulstraße and became a permanent fixture in the cityscape.

The focus was always on comfortable but fashionable shoes - a recipe for success. In 1972, the store was extensively renovated and expanded to over 400 square meters. Over 15,000 pairs of shoes found their place here - and with them many stories, encounters and loyal regular customers.

Schuhhaus Keßel ceased trading in March 2016. The building was then extensively modernized as part of a two-and-a-half-year renovation - one of the largest construction sites in the city centre. The historic façade was deliberately preserved so that the building could retain its typical character.

Deichmann finally announced its move into the new premises in 2017 - thus building on the long-standing shoe tradition at the site.

What does an escaped monkey have to do with Berliner Strasse 60?

The photo shows master furrier H. Niehaus with his daughters - a craftsman who processed furs, made clothes and refurbished old furs. In his shop window at Berliner Straße 60, he presented hats, caps and fur accessories as well as an unusual specialty: a stuffed monkey.

The story behind it comes from the Roggenkamp family chronicles and tells a true story from the neighborhood: the Urban family kept a chained monkey on their farm. When Sophie Roggenkamp annoyed him one day, the animal broke free, bit her on the leg and later caused a commotion in the neighborhood with another escape. After a wild chase through gardens and streets, the monkey was caught and finally killed. The stuffed monkey eventually ended up in the furrier's shop window - and thus became part of the town's history itself.

Today, nothing reminds us of the unusual shop window dweller - but the building itself lives on:
In spring 2021, the house was Berliner Strasse 60 extensively renovated. The façade was repaired, modernized and repainted. Inside, the store area was remodeled at the same time and adapted for today's Peacock fashion store prepared.

How has the Kropp shoe store managed to combine tradition, innovation and quality over 150 years and become an integral part of Gütersloh's city history?

In 1855, Wilhelm Kropp, a master shoemaker from Gütersloh, founded his own shoemaking business. With his skilled craftsmanship and high quality standards, he made a decisive contribution to Gütersloh's citizens soon having the reputation of always being able to walk well.

As early as 1890, Wilhelm Kropp expanded his range by offering shoes for the first time that were no longer made in his own workshop, but which he purchased directly from wholesalers by horse and cart - an early step in the direction of trade.

His son, Heinrich Kropp senior, recognized the signs of the times in 1910 and added a store to the traditional shoemaking business. In doing so, he laid the foundations for the transition from a craft business to a modern specialist shoe store.

In 1929, Heinrich Kropp junior set new standards with a great deal of energy and entrepreneurial spirit by having a spacious new building erected to accommodate the growing customer base.

In 1961, he handed over the business to his son and successor Eduard Falkenreck, a trained shoe specialist. Under his management, the shoe store continued to develop steadily.

In 1966, the store was extensively renovated, attracting not only numerous customers but also trade visitors from all over Germany. Word of the select range of top-quality European products spread far beyond the borders of Gütersloh.

In 1976, the shoe store was given a modern face: with a new interior design, the store once again set a clear example of progress and customer proximity - in keeping with the founding tradition.

In 1991, Schuhhaus Kropp was named one of the five best specialist shoe stores in Germany in the "Avis - Best of Germany" rating - an important quality award.

In 1994, the Kunstverein für die Stadt und den Kreis Gütersloh (Art Association for the City and District of Gütersloh) dedicated a special tribute to the shoe store: in the Veerhoffhaus, it showed the exhibition "Shoes and Art", which came exclusively from Eduard Falkenreck's private collection.

After 150 years of company history, characterized by traditional craftsmanship, a spirit of innovation and a keen sense of quality and style, the shoe store closed its doors on August 1, 2005.

Together with the neighboring building at Strengerstrasse 2, the building forms a structural unit and closes off Konrad-Adenauer-Platz to the south. The representative facades were professionally renovated in 2002 and 2005. The Marc O'Polo store in Gütersloh has been located here since 2007.

Today, Fritzenkötter is one of the most traditional bakeries in the region, run by master confectioner Christoph Fritzenkötter and his wife Inka.

Together with the neighboring building at Berliner Strasse 62, the historic building forms a harmonious structural unit and closes off Konrad-Adenauer-Platz to the south. The representative facades were carefully renovated in 2002 and 2005, so that the charm of the building has been preserved to this day.
